By Safia Rafiq
Though, it is very shocking for parents to know that their child is taking drugs. Initially, they are in complete denial by rejecting the reality, later on start cursing their fate in spite of taking step to resolve this matter realistically. They are overwhelmed by feeling of guilt and shame.
Here, parents must understand that their guilt, shame and anger will not work out at all, though it is very painful for them. If they want their child to be recovering from this disease, they should first understand the nature of the problem, identify the causing factors and should get help from significant others.
Being good parents, first positively communicate with your child over this sensitive issue. Try to rule out how their child started taking drugs and why. It will help you to identify the problem on one hand and to reduce the communication gap between you and your child on the other hand. Putting blame on child and your fate will increase the distance; as a result, chances of recovery will be minimized.
Try to forgive your child and encourage him or her to get help from professionals. In order to take back child on the right path, it is essential to forgive his first mistake along with providing realistic solutions for his problems. Follow instructions of professional regarding treatment of your child, provide positive environment that can facilitate his recovery. All those factors responsible for his addictive behavior must be discussed in healthy way in order to have long term recovery from drugs.
Parents are basically helping hands for children. Unhealthy and insecure attitude of parents increases the chances among children to go astray. Therefore, parents should understand their role in preventing and treating drug abuse problems in their children.
